Over the years I've wasted countless hours installing huge dependency trees, dicking with build scripts and package managers, and struggling to learn archaic interfaces and obfuscationally documented tools which don't stack up to ORCAD from the late 80s. Personally, I'm past the point where I've cut my losses on open source EDA tools on OSX. Then users report OSX specific interface bugs which are never fixed by the dev team because they don't have Macs. While they pay lip service to the (potentially) cross-platform nature of their projects, nobody has a Mac and it's up to someone outside the project to bandage a package together and figure out what kind of hacks you need to do to get a build going. The truth is these open source devs use Linux on the desktop as a religion. The experience with Kicad on OSX is similar. I can limp through getting a library and schematic together in gschem, but every time I've used pcb on OSX there were some game-ending bugs.
